On Your Mark, Get Set, Go! by Alva Sachs–A Book Review for MCBD 2018

This year I was lucky and I got to review two books for Multicultural Book Day this year, one of those being On Your Mark, Get Set, Go! written by Alva Sachs and illustrated by Patricia Krebs.

This book is about three friends, Justin, Mario, and Marcus, who have exhausted their typical Saturday activities, playing video games and raiding the refrigerator for lunch, but now they’re bored. Luckily, Justin’s dad has a great and creative idea! The boys make over their skateboards, and then all 3 boys, along with their dads, take a trip to the park, where they end up having the perfect Saturday afternoon.

There are many things to like about this book, which was an International Book Awards finalist in 2010. First, children under the age of 8 would find this book enjoyable, I see it as one that it would not take long for them to be able to read it on their own after having it read to them a couple of times. Next, the three boys look nothing alike, they come in different shapes, shades, and sizes, and although we don’t learn a whole lot about the boys, you can see they each have distinct personalities as well.  Additionally, the fact that you don’t see the moms in this story at all, just some son and father bonding, is a rarity in kidlit, but is written naturally in this story. And of course, there the positive storyline, perfect for repeated bedtime reads!

See how different they are? I love it!

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2018 (1/27/18) is in its 5th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in home and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.
